The wood in the box portion is too soft or poorly selected.

“Shortly after assembling and putting the bench into service, we discovered the hinges holding the cushioned top in place were coming loose. On the L side, the screws were partially stripped, and on the R, the wooden frame has split, leaving the screws with no purchase. These findings suggest poor quality of wood used in the frame of the box portion.
I have repaired the bench by filling screw holes on the L side, and moving the R hinge farther from the end. If the repairs don’t hold, the only other option will be removal of the upholstery and replacing the wood… or trashing the unit.”
